If we talk generally,SAP is product based company like Oracle,Microsoft.Google.
AS oracle has its own product that is oracle Satabse.
IBM has many products like DB2,DB6.
In similar manner SAP is a very popular and successful product of SAP company.or we can say SAP is software or product launched by SAP.
I have summarized overall history SAP product,How SAP launched new product in which year ?We always get confused about what is SAP R3 ,What is SAP R2 ,What is ERP,What is ECC ? i tried to clear all these doubts —
In 1973, the first commercial product was launched. It was called SAP R/98
in 1979, SAP launched SAP R/2, expanding the capabilities of the system to other areas, such as material management and production planning
In 1992, SAP released the new SAP R/3.
SAP developed and released several versions of R/3 ,R3 4.5,R3 4.6, R3 4.7
Overall history SAP changed product from SAP R/3:
- SAP R/3 Enterprise Release 4.0B —- It was released in 1998
- SAP R/3 Enterprise Release 4.5B
It was released in 1999 - SAP R/3 Enterprise Release 4.6C
It was released in 1999 - SAP R/3 Enterprise Release 4.6C
It was released in 2001 - SAP R/3 and R/3 Enterprise 4.70 SR1
It was released in 2003

Here ERP came into the picture and complete architecture changed with the introduction of mySAP ERP edition in 2004. R/3 Enterprise was replaced with the introduction of ERP Central Component (SAP ECC).
ERP Central Component or we can say ECC 5.0 version and was released in 2005.- ERP Central Component or we can say ECC 6.0 version and was released in 2006.
- latest product is running SAP ECC 6.0 EHP8.
What is ERP:
SAP ECC is part of the SAP ERP application (actually it is the minimal installation of SAP ERP). It is complete package.It stands for Enterprise Resource Planing
What is ECC:
ECC is an application component, which will work on with the help of this Application/Technology Platform – or we can say Netweaver ,It requires base at the bottom (NW).ECC6 is called as Enterprise Core component, which has basic modules of ERP like (FI, CO, MM and So on)
SAP ECC 5.0 is part of SAP ERP 2004 [which runs on SAP NetWeaver ’04]
SAP ECC 6.0 is part of SAP ERP 6.0 (2005) [which runs on SAP NetWeaver 7.0 (2004s)]
In 2015, the company launched SAP S/4HANA,It’s in memory Databse of SAP.
